If I were going to build a system today, I would use:
  1. images/bd10265.gif If I were Building a System Today... (2/26/2009) by Joe Whinery
  2. images/bd10265.gif Joe Whinery's List of Excel Spread Sheet - PC Build Specs: (Compare Prior Build Specs).

Component changes include CPU, Memory and Motherboard.

Due to the current short life cycles of Chip Sets and GPUs (from 3 to 6 months), Motherboards and Graphics cards are going obsolete quicker than I can evaluate the new crop. The same thing is happening to DVD and DVD-RW drives. Therefore, don't be surprised if your supplier suggests a different part number for some recommended device. Check the specs and it they are the same or very similar run with it.

For proper Display (1024x768). When Printing, change your Printer Driver properties from Portrait to Landscape mode. Otherwise, you may not be able to print this worksheet with all Part Numbers viewed. Enjoy! GB

Additional PC Build Considerations & Information:

Note: Our DVD+-RW Burner Options Listed will work with SATA AHCI. Use either PATA Optical Devices and OR SATA Optical Devices. In the beginning, we were instructed to use ONLY PATA Optical Drives. Why? AHCI Configuration did NOT like SATA Optical Devices! Why enable AHCI (Advanced Host Controller Interface ) in the first place - Provides ability to Hot Swap SATA HD Drives other than O/S Drive. Note: AHCI support should be installed at time of O/S installation to make certain correct Drivers are installed. Following this link to enable AHCI after the fact!
