Tokyo, Sep 30, 2001 (EFE via COMTEX) -- Japanese conglomerate Hitachi said it
would stop producing dynamic random access memory (DRAM) computer chips because
of declining margins, the Sankei daily reported Sunday. Hitachi plans to close
its DRAM manufacturing operations in Germany next year and shut down a
semiconductor plant in Singapore in 2003.
Hitachi's memory chip losses totaled 95 billion yen ($798 million) during the
current fiscal year, Sankei reported. Hitachi is Japan's third-largest
semiconductor maker behind NEC and Toshiba, but the company has faced stiff
competition from Taiwanese and South Korean producers.
NEC and Fujitsu announced previously that they would cease to produce DRAM
chips, while Toshiba said last month that it would cut 20,000 jobs. EFE
