Win2000 Fonts Overview:

Fonts display text on screen and print text to a printer. A Font is a set of type characters of a particular typeface design and size. In Windows 2000, a font is the name of a typeface. Fonts have font styles including regular, italic, bold, and bold italic.

Windows 2000 provides three basic Font Technologies: Scalable Outline, Vector & Fixed Raster Fonts.

Raster Fonts:

Windows 2000 supports five Raster Fonts, a.k.a. Bitmapped Fonts. Raster fonts are designed with a specific size and resolution for a specific printer and cannot be scaled or rotated. If a printer does not support raster fonts, it will not print them. The five raster fonts are Courier, MS Sans Serif, MS Serif, Small, and Symbol.

Vector Fonts:

Vector Fonts are supported because a number of programs still depend on them. Vector fonts are rendered from a mathematical model. They are used primarily with plotters. A Vector font is useful for devices such as pen plotters that cannot reproduce bitmapped, Raster Fonts. Characters are drawn in arrangements of line segments rather than patterns of dots and can be scaled to any size or aspect ratio. The three vector fonts are Modern, Roman, and Script. Scalable Outline Fonts:

Win2000 fully supports TrueType (*.ttf), new TrueType Outlines - OpenType (*.ttf), TrueType Collections (*.ttc). & Adobe PostScript Type 1 (*.pfm) Fonts. OpenType is an extension of TrueType.

In the Windows Fonts folder, Raster, Vector, and Scalable Outline Fonts have the following icons:

2. PostScript font support is built directly into Windows 2000! Adobe Type Manager Light. Windows 2000 will see postscript *.pfm (Postscript Font Metrics) files. Try it out and see for yourself!
